WATER FLEA
If you throw a flea into the water, it doesn't suddenly become a water flea. In fact, water fleas aren't even real fleas! They’re small crustaceans called Daphnia which can be traced all the way back to the Jurassic period. This means that, yes, water fleas coexisted with dinosaurs! For centuries, water fleas have played an important role in ecosystems: they eat (bad) algae and are an important food source for many fish and salamanders. In addition, they have some wicked genetics. Some water fleas have as many as 31,000 different genes. To put that into context, a human has only 20,000!
